2016 Olympic Games Go To Rio
On Friday 2nd October, 2009 Rio de Janeiro was voted host city for the 2016 Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee beating the other 3 final candidates; Tokyo , Chicago and Madrid. This is an historic victory for Brazil as they become the first South American country to host the modern Olympic Games in its 115 year history. There has been 30 Games in Europe, 5 in Asia, 12 in North America including 8 in the United States and now, for the first time, South America.
Brazillians Support the Nations Bid
Each bid is judged according to eleven criteria: government support, legal issues and public opinion, general infrastructure, sport venues, Olympic village, environmental conditions and impact, accommodation, transport concept, safety and security, experience from past sport events, finance and overall project and legacy.
Brazil's bid was convincing and compelling. President Lula was committed and ever present throughout the bidding process delivering financial guarantees, personal letters to every International Olympic Committee member, visits to Beijing and London, establishing cross party support and igniting passion for the games in every corner of Brazil.
One Country, Two of the Biggest Sporting Events in the World
It's difficult to believe that one country will host the 2 biggest sporting events in the World within 2 years of each other but Brazil has managed to secure such a great honor; the FIFA World Cup Finals in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016. If it is not firmly on the map already, Brazil will undoubtedly be a fixture as we move into the 2010's.
Great News for Investors
For property investors considering Brazil, a country that is still considered by many an emerging market, the facts are becoming undeniable. Brazil's economy has faired better than most in the recent economic downturn, the middle class keeps growing and tourism and foreign investment is on the rise. These two international events are certain to cement this beautiful country in people's hearts and minds forever and for those lucky few, a place in paradise.
